Whew, this book had me wishing I was on Tairn's back so I could've strapped myself in for the wildest ride that this story takes you on. The gang gang (Ridoc, Rhi, Sawyer, and Vi) continue to enlighten the book with cute found family moments, lighthearted jokes to poke fun at one another, and be the comic relief scenes between holding my breath and gasping audibly when something crazy happens in the chapters inbetween. I found the writing to be repetitive still at times (Violet saying "Noted", breathing through her nose and out through her mouth, Tairn flying the fastest ever, that Xaden eclipsed/took up space/ was the sun or gravity in the room, and almost tripping over her feet over shocking news got old quick after 300 chapters), and I didn't fully understand Xaden and Violet's relationship this go-around, almost had me shipping Violet and Dain more at times. Still one of the more thrilling and adventurous books I've read, and Rebecca does not disappoint. Faint wait for the third!

Super disappointed. Absolutely no more plot, it's messy, immature and focuses too much on the romantic interest for me. The random sex scene pull me out of the story (I skip them) and the pace is super slow for very little actual plot happening. I couldn't push myself to finish it; it was a significant downfall from the first book.

Was pretty slow and painful having to listen to the 2 main characters argue for majority of the book. I wish there was more character development and better world building. In saying that, I still cried at the end and really enjoy when the book is went into fun, adventurous plot lines.

What. Even. I have to wait until DECEMBER? I really can’t. The ending of this book is such a cliffhanger and a twist I was not anticipating. I enjoyed this book, but felt some of it could’ve been condensed. I also felt that some of the magic wasn’t explained as well as I would’ve liked, but all in all, this was a good part 2. The characters are embedded in my heart now, and I hope they all have a happy ending.

Summary: We are back at Basgiath for Violet’s second year. She has just returned to school after surviving a battle against Wyvern and Venin, two beings that up to this point, Vi believed only existed in fairy tales because the government has been keeping them a secret. She is angry at Xaden for not confiding in her that he has known about them AND about her brother being alive. At school and abroad there are new threats coming for the Empyrean and Violet and the rest of her squad (new and old) have to learn to work together if they want to defeat them.

Review: There is A LOT more world building in this one than Fourth Wing, and I think that’s why many people have been disappointed. But I don’t think this book deserves all the disdain it’s been getting! I did a combination of listening to the audiobook and reading on my Kindle, and that worked really well for me. If I got to a part that dragged a bit, I listened to the audiobook, and then I was able to pick up the Kindle version once the story got more exciting.

I loved seeing Violet become more attached to her dragons. I had so much anxiety for little (well, not so little anymore!) Andarna, who easily became my favorite dragon.

I know her character was meant to rile us up, but Cat can kindly see the door. I’m glad things ended up settling between everyone, but the way I wanted to drop kick her every time she spoke…

The whole book I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop with Xaden. I knew he was holding something back and I think Violet was 100% validated in being bothered that he wanted her to ask the right questions. Dude efffff that. Communication is about openness and honesty, not whether or not someone can draw the right answers out of you. Did not care for that. And I’m glad Violet stood up for herself!

I’m very much looking forward to book 3!!

Great overall story, but would prefer a quicker pace that builds rather than multiple mini-events with lots of “waiting” time in between.
