Dark, dark, dark is great, great, great, and Saul Black delivers here. The opening grabs you by the throat and holds on, and at every turn, you wonder if the characters you're rooting for will survive - or not. I read this in one (late into the wee hours) sitting. Good thing I don't scare easily.

My expectations were far too high for this book. I think I was expecting a huge plot twist and nothing was that unexpected? The ending was definitely exciting and building towards something, but that something just kind of fell flat for me.
This book is a great readalike for fans of Jeffrey Deaver, Harlan Coben, or serial killer/cop dramas.
If you're a fan of horror, check out the author's other works under the name Glen Duncan. The Last Werewolf is one of my favs.

This book starts out with the classic premise of a damaged, alcoholic detective single-mindedly pursuing a brutal serial killer, but unfolds in unexpected ways. The character development on all sides of the unfolding conflict adds a layer of depth, while the perspective changes between characters keep the action moving. Detective Valerie Hart is a compelling lead character - complex, smart, and unwavering. I would hope that the author continues to build on her back story in future books. This was a really enjoyable and well executed thriller, and I will absolutely be on the look out for Saul Black's next book.

Graphic: Gore, Sexual content
Good book. Disturbing and graphic, but it had a good pace to it. I skimmed over some of the parts with the Valeria and Carla drama, i don't think that really added anything to the story and is why I have taken 1 star off. Otherwise, this was a really good, deeply terrifying and sad book. The way the author made you feel both pity and sympathy for Leon while at the same time making you feel disgust and horror at his actions I found was really well done. All in all a solid story.

A fast-paced, relatively easy read focusing on a prolific serial killer and the people who got caught in his orbit. The story alternates between a cast of characters for each chapter that keeps the story moving and lets in unfold in an organic, connected way. If graphic violence and gore bother's you, I'd give this book a second thought as it features a host of scenes the leave nothing to the imagination (not that you'd want to imagine it anyway). The last two chapters are a little too "Hollywood" for my liking, so if you don't like big, dramatic endings... don't get your hopes up for this one
