It's a ridiculous book, and I found myself so often being like, no, stop it, this is seriously ridiculous, what are you doing, but it was still super fun and decently cute, love-story-wise, though that part doesn't happen until way late in the novel.

While reading this book I totally had to rethink my "cool" factor. I have always been comfortable with my exposure to geekdom, but now see that I fall far short and need to put some more time in. I got schooled in film and music and can see I'll have to put in a large Netflix order and start exploring on Spotify. For me, this was the real attraction of the book.
The story begins with a group of unpopular students being bullied in the hallway. A new student, Camilla, arrives and everyone's lives begin to change. Camilla's father is a famous rock'n'roll journalist/music critic so she's instantly on the A list. Moving from place to place has made her able to fit in and succeed anywhere, so she scopes out the situation and becomes a member of every (and thereby none of the) cliques. She especially latches onto that unpopular group because she senses that they are not interested in her father's vicarious fame and accept her at face value.
The romance and friendship plot angles are not exceptional, but come with a healthy dose of humor.
The fact that the story is set in Australia made it more interesting for me, since the references to places and school terminology were unfamiliar. Seasons not matching up with expected months was weird also.

I really liked reading this classic "underdog has his day" YA novel, despite its predictable ending. The main character speaks with a truly believable voice, the plot doesn't rely on snarky one liners to engage its readers, and I'm always a sucker for the underdog.

*Loved this book. A perfect combination of Spinelli's Stargirl, a John Green book, and a rom-com. Loved the voice, quirks, characters, and plot. A sleeper title from 2013 that you should read.

A couple things I really loved about this book:
-The characters are such good people. Although they evolve, they never were kids I wouldn't want my son to hang out with.
-A romancey book from a boy's point of view!
-Camilla is so cool yet so uncool and just shows how the labels and cliques and such of high school are just so stupid. Oh, and that you cannot judge a book by its cover.
-The writing, music, and movie references. Just a bit of geeky, but not too much.

I think first and foremost, this book needs to be in libraries so that kids (and adults!) can get their hands on it. In the classroom, it can definitely be used as for a mentor text. I think it is perfect for an example of character development and voice. The characters in this book are so strong and there are lines and passages throughout that show the characters’ personality. There are also parts that deal with writing poetry/music and would be great passages to talk about writing with students.

Really liked Sam's character felt real and reachable. The cliché ending was expected but I still loved how it was written.

A cute rom-com read. All the references to classic horror and SciFi movies were greatly appreciated. All in all it was quick read that was really funny in some parts. If you like rom-coms, you will really like this book.

Decent, although a bit too much of the manic pixie dream girl (loathe though I am to use the term). But it mostly made me long for a book written from the nerdy girl perspective. Or from the object of nerdy boy love perspective.
