Well written and thought provoking. Too many similarities to when it was written and what is happening now in the world. Always a battle of good vs evil. Highly recommend to read!

Moved onto top many other things. I think very large books I need to read physically, not digitally

As you read/listen to this, if you've read The Stand, this feels almost like McCammon's attempt at The Stand but with nuclear war, but in the end you don't care that there's this sense of Good and Evil, that the character arcs feel similar, that there's this sense of magic that pervades. It's still a great book, about post-apocalyptic America, written as the apocalypse occurs. As a child of the 80s, the early chapters describing nuclear war were so terrifying and brought back some childhood fears for sure. Reading this also made me understand the concept of nuclear winter, and the long-term effects of what nuclear blasts would bring. This is a story about characters and their hearts and their struggles, but I cannot not call out that this is simply an immensely readable fanfiction AU of The Stand.

Ugh. I LOVED the first half of this book. I thought for sureeeee it was going to be a 5 star read, but it just didn’t keep me interested.
I genuinely think the time jump crippled the story’s momentum and it would’ve been much better without it. Also the man with the scarlet eye turned out to be a dud of a villian imo.
