i really liked this one. it took me….. *checks watch* a really, really long time to get through it. which sometimes happens with a 900 page book. not because i wasn’t enjoying it (i mean, it basically reads like a tv show), but because there was so much going on i wanted to make sure i had time to focus on all of it.
i love post apocalyptic fiction a lot. i always find it an interesting world to play in. when i started this book i had no idea what it was about, but as soon as the world started going to shit it had my curiosity but also i started to feel nervous about some of the characters and what this book was going to ultimately be about.
it starts with survival, and i feared i was in for an ultimately cynical adventure. however, it then shifts to rebuilding, and that’s when it takes an even more interesting turn for me. i love the survival part, but i liked seeing what people actually planned to do with this terrible world they inherited. and it was nice to see something optimistic about building community and moving forward, especially these days.
the characters are good but they don’t really evolve too much. they’re all a bit more two dimensional than i would like with the exception of Sister Creep, who was my favorite by a landslide. Josh followed in a close second. there were many good supporting characters as well—Leona, Paul, and Rusty in particular. they flesh this book out a lot.
also, that last line…. hell yeah.
this book was loaned to me by my manager, who is thrilled with how much i enjoyed it. in exchange i gave him my copy of mistborn, which he loved. all in all a very good trade (though it took me longer to read this one book than it took him to read the entire first mistborn trilogy lol)

Way too long! This was very similar to The Stand by Stephen King. I liked the ending but it was a slog to get there.
