Look, there are many things wrong with this book. The slight eugenicist undertones, the way it tries to question gender and gender roles but often ends up doing so at the expense of women not in Herland without digging into the underlying causes. The way it deprived women of sexual desire. I could go on. But it was also absolutely fascinating. Reading it was a wild ride.

The points made with this book, especially as they reflect the treatment of women at the time of its writing, but also as it relates to today's gender inequalities, were very interesting and thought provoking. There are triggers in this book, half of which I could forgive because they aren't things the author supports/advocates for. They are flaws of the main characters' world views. However, I was unable to forgive the author's blatant racism and it is for that reason I rated it lower than I otherwise would have.

its insane to me that a book written 100+ years ago still rings so true for so many aspects of our societies. yearning for a herland myself.
(also they were lesbians in herland change my mind)

herland is so good and then BOOM men

A fantastic novel! I loved how it presented a feminist utopia like More might, with each chapter dedicated to a different aspect of life, while still having an engaging and foward-moving narrative. The book is a hundred years old, so the content is a little dated (were there no lesbians in Herland?), but it was still an incredibly enjoyable book.

I found that while this is a book I am glad I read, it is not one I see myself returning to. Our narrator, in his effort to catalog his experience, can be quite jumpy, and the formal language made it something of a slow book, even if more than a year takes place in the hundred or so pages.

Although I appreciate the satire, Herland doesn’t represent feminism of today’s time. Feminism is intersectional. The idea of a women dominated society is not original to Gilman either. Sultana’s Dream by Begum Rokeya was published 10 years prior among other works of fiction that delve into the same trope.
