i’m sort of disappointed in this book as the final instalment in the trilogy. i feel as if each book is weaker than the last and that pains me to say because i wanted to like this one so much more than i did. whilst i still love emily and wendell, for a book in which they get married and half the conflict is keeping wendell from dying, there is not nearly enough interactions between the two. i missed their banter a lot in this one.

i do appreciate that the plot does come full circle in this one in that we go back to the beginning, tying up lots of loose threads, i feel like this one also leaves just as many frayed. i’m willing to forgive a lot of plot jumping due to faerie magic but there are some incidents where i was just like okay sure, whatever, why the hell not?!!

i do however love that poe makes a return because i think he might be my favourite character. and my beloved lesbians are here. emily does finally realise she has made a family for herself after never really having one and that was probably my favourite part of this book. she has a community in her found family and i love that. but back to my original point, the romance is lacking in this one. i wanted far more scenes of them being blissfully married and i was ROBBED! also i feel as if the final chapter is a lacklustre finale and i wanted more of it.

it’s definitely worth finishing the trilogy but it could have been better.

The familiar style of writing and the natural cadence of the narrative in this book was refreshing to come back to after having stepped away from the Emily Wilde's series for a few months. I think I might've enjoyed it much more had I been able to read it sequentially instead of eagerly waiting for the third book to come out, though it wasn't difficult to retain the memories from the previous books, and the series does a great job of referencing what has previously occurred. Admittedly, however, it felt like there were a few too many twists and turns that prompted the book to feel like it kept going instead of finalizing it's story, creating a few threads that it needed to tie up as needed. Overall, though, still a great series altogether!
