This book is the most confusing yet intriguing book I’ve ever read. Amidst unreliable narrators, erratic time-jumps and the constant deciphering for some semblance of “truth”, Bell slips in some beautiful poetic comments about the world and the relationship between the two sisters. I really enjoyed the competing and misaligned perspectives of the twins throughout the novel and I truly think it’s what makes this story shine.
Such an odd read... The writing is really kitsch and a little condescending towards its YA audience... you feel simultaneously that very serious material is being hurled at you in a style befitting primary school language.
I like the POV switch and the concept of the unreliable narration with a kind of fairytale twist, but I also feel like it didn't have the execution and emotional charge I was looking for.
I think this author will produce some really interesting stuff for YA in future, and absolute props to the WA author.

Found it really hard to get through the story. I admire the author's aim in attempting to intergrate classic literature, fantasy, dystopia and teenage voices into a singular story, but I felt that it came off as messy. The slow reveal of the mystery as to why the twins were left on the island was done well however I was ultimately left unsatisfied by the ending.

I think the story itself was good and interesting but the characters just weren't believable. It's not been that long since I was a teen girl and I can safely say neither I nor anyone I knew was anything close to these girls or the way they thought and spoke. It very much felt like how adults think teenage girls think and act but they really don't.
