I loved the Rashomon-esque nature of the chapters. A very unique and intricate thriller that keeps you on your toes throughout.

The story had a gripping concept, but the rotating points of view quickly became repetitive. Instead of adding new depth, each chapter would rehash the same events with minor tweaks, making the story feel tedious. The base plot is dark and compelling, but the execution drags it down.

Confessions focuses on mothers and their sons. Both Naoyi and Shūya are reflections of their mothers, in all their overbearing, self conscious, abusive and arrogant glory.

Every chapter reflects on Manami’s death and the aftermath. Each character’s perspective is trying to wrestle with how they became involved. Minato weaves each character’s emotions and own perspectives together. Everyone is desperately trying to justify their actions. Some more pathetically than others.

I did not like the ending chapter. The ending is fitting - in that you reap what you sow. But, I do think adding Moriguchi’s perspective back in detracted from earlier events.

Clarification about the contaminated milk wasn’t necessarily needed. I think Moriguchi lying was more fitting to her contradicting feelings (love of a mother vs duty of a teacher) than having her partner replace the milk.

Furthermore, the last chapter is heavy-handed in the moralization of the story. It feels like Minato didn’t trust the audience to come to conclusions themselves.

The storytelling in chapter one is incredible. I think it could be a standalone short story. 5 stars.

The middle chapters pale in comparison. 2-3 stars.

The final chapter gave me chills. Full circle. Ruthless. 5 stars.

Pro tip: Listen to/read a chapter all in one sitting. Most chapters are long (estimated 60-90 minutes on audiobook), and each is narrated in first-person by a different character.

This was such a wild ride from the beginning. I couldn’t put it down and found it entertaining and gripping. The ending was a little far fetched, but it still worked for me overall. Would love to read more from the author.

PLOT TWIST AFTER PLOT TWIST! Like every couple of pages was the vine gunshot sound effect. Obsessed with Moriguchi getting her lick back so effectively against these two little bastards, I support women’s rights and wrongs.
