A wonderful book that celebrates not a celebrity but a friend. William Shatner talks about their similar childhoods and all the circumstances that managed to bring them both together. His affection and admiration are clear.
While the book is chronological, it is not a rigid biography and each chapter followed its own thread regardless of if that required past or future details. Alcoholism and estrangement are addressed as openly as his compassion and professional dedication.
The only detractions are the fault of Scribecorp who transcribed De Kelley's name incorrectly and a questionable memory which Bill Shatner freely admits to. He has in fact told some anecdotes before with different details but we can forgive him that. It was actually ironic as the anecdote involved teasing another actor about his failing memory :)

If you like Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner you will like this book and if you don't...well then you probably aren't reading this right now. It's not a straight biography of a man just as the title says it is a biography of a friendship. There is a bit of Shatner in the book as well as holes in Nimoy's life story if you are looking for a biography on Leonard Nimoy you would do better to look to other books. This is a chronicling of a friendship, how it came about and how it endured.

I've never been at all interested in Star Trek but I was quite fascinated by the story and a lot of this was new to me as I knew next to nothing about either actor. I'm actually keen now to take a look at Nimoy's work and possibly take a look at some of the iconic episodes that Shatner mentions.

The only thing that can be a bit difficult is Shatner's style of narration. The start of his sentences are often much louder than the end and I did have trouble catching some of his words. I think he also has a tendency for run on sentences and as Shatner doesn't pause for breath, again his voice gets quieter and breaks as he gets to the end of the sentence or paragraph.

However you can tell that he writes and speaks with great feeling for the subject and it gave me greater affection for Nimoy and Spock.

There's so much to say about this book that I don't know where to start. The book leaves you feeling nostalgic and a little bit sad at the end but you also can't help but smiling. It's obvious how much William Shatner loved Leonard Nimoy in the way that he writes about him. They weren't always best friends and Shatner readily admits to being jealous of Nimoy's success in the beginning. He could have divulged further into the on-set feud rumors but the reader can see that he knows what he did wasn't the right way to behave. He could be seen as naive in a way but I think that's the charm of William Shatner. I knew so little of Nimoy before and this book was enlightening! I think the only fault is that William Shatner tends to jump around, going back and forth, and repeat himself on occasion. I still stand by my rating.

An interesting look at Leonard Nimoy's life through the lens of his friendship with William Shatner. Some of this I already knew, but there were plenty of new insights for me.
