This was not at all what I expected but I was happily surprised. There were some slow parts but that is expected for world building. I can't wait for the next book!!

Loved this book! Cannot recommend it enough. A great book that centers Black voices and experiences. For those who are sensitive to the subject, it does not quite center Black pain or trauma, but does cover and include it. In my opinion, at it’s core this is a book about the inheritance of love from mother to daughter for generations, through some of the worst periods in history, and how it is stronger than any other obstacle.

Oh...my...gosh. At first glance I wanted to say that this is something between ACOTAR and Shadownhunters, but in reality it is so much more. It explores the topics of racism, slavery, legend of King Arthur, LGBTQ+, grief, and so so much more. This book is unique. Very. It's written from a different perspective, one most folks don't hear about. I cannot wait for the relase of the sequel!

 King Arthur may be lost to history, but his spirit, and those of his knights, are (literally) alive in their descendants. The secret society of the Round Table exists quietly on college campuses around the United States, where students are trained to fight demons. After her mother’s sudden death in a car crash, 16-year-old Bree Matthews goes to UNC Chapel Hill for early college. On her very first night, she sees a demon at a college party, then watches as two students kill it. Suddenly, Bree begins to suspect that her mother’s death wasn’t as random as she had believed, and she forces her way into a world where knights and pages and mythical kings still exist.

I was initially put off by the fact that this story is set in college so most of the characters are college students, but Bree is actually there early and is even younger (I know this is a young adult book but….damn). However, she is very mature and intelligent, as well as funny, stubborn, and fierce in her protectiveness for those she loves, so I quickly warmed to her and looked past her age… she’s an old soul (literally).

I am totally obsessed with the concept of magic looking different in different cultures and traditions, and I felt the contrast between root magic and aether/”colonizer magic” was really well done.

I also <i>loved</i> the twist at the end that Bree is the Scion of King Arthur, while Nick is Lancelot’s heir. Nick (and others) calling her “King” is just… yes!!!

Happy enough, but mostly leaves you wanting more…I can’t wait for the sequel!

I really loved thus book by the end. At first there was a lot of world building and mystery to get through for a low-fantasy but it was so worth it. Bree was an excellent and relatable main lead but also was able to explore deep and hard topics like grief and generational trauma in a way that really worked. There was an expansive cast of characters but so many of them were fun and interesting without stealing too much spotlight from the main characters.
