It hurts to not love a Gamache book! But this one was just not one I liked much. I ADORED the small little detail of the roof ridge! But the rest...bah. I didn't like the thin motivations, the years and years of hurt over one inconsequential thing that even a child would forget the next day. No, these people could carry hateful grudges over a dropped cookie! 95% of this story was a lot of spite and malice and meanness with no cause I could make sense of. Very thin. And Peter & Clara both act like petulant children for goodness sake. Honestly, I wasn’t rooting for anyone in this story! Maybe except Bean.

I've been enjoying this series but I think I may have overdosed a little. Going to put it aside for a bit but will in all likelihood come back to them.

This is my favorite of the series so far, even though very little takes place in Three Pines. Food, family, nature, and a solid mystery make for a lovely read. Glad to get a better handle on Peter, who always gives me the heebie jeebies.

During a summer heat wave, Inspector Armand Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie visit a luxurious inn in the countryside for their customary anniversary visit. This year, a contentious family is also staying at the inn, which Gamache is shocked to learn are Peter Morrow's relatives. After a statue dedicated to their late father is unveiled, one of the family members is murdered and Gamache must use his investigative skills to solve the case, even if one of his friends is a prime suspect.
The fourth entry into the Inspector Gamache series was just okay. I still think Inspector Gamache is a great character and I adore his wife. Moving the story out of Three Pines was a nice change and allowed the novel to focus more deeply on Peter and Clara Morrow. Though the case itself was intriguing, thought the action-packed ending felt a bit rushed. Everyone keeps telling me to hang on until books five and six, so I guess I'll give Penny a few more tries to see if she can reel me back into the series.

Perfect for what it is. An excellent, mind-turning mystery and an even more mysterious cast of characters. Cosy setting at a small, lakeside vacation villa. This is the best Gamache book yet.
