I wanted to like this book more than I did in reality. I thoroughly enjoy African fantasy and folklore/mysticism, but I didn't find this story to be as interesting as it should be. The characters are unassuming and the storytelling makes it even harder to follow the story. I forced myself to finish it off. Probably won't read the next one.

I found the setting of the book engaging and Tash to be compelling. The slower scenes walking through the markets were beautiful and brought me into the world. But this book is so clearly part of a trilogy that it doesn't stand well alone. The resolution of the book is rushed and leaves much unresolved, presumably so the following book can pick up on them but there isn't a clear sense here if the larger story arc.

DNF at page 215. I really wanted to like this book. I love the ideas and the story landscape, but unfortunately there was so much inconsistency in the writing and characterizations that i just couldn't bring myself to finish it. I stopped caring about the characters because they were a mess. The plot was kind of sporadic and I'm not even sure what the driving problem in the novel is... Could have been really good but unfortunately missed the mark for me.

Really interesting world and strong potential in the story, but the plot itself was too disjointed and the characters felt underdeveloped.

As much as I wanted to finish this book I couldn’t. Loved the concept.. but my dyslexia got the better of me

It wasn't terrible, and some parts were very well done, but I feel that it missed the mark.
