I read this short story after reading about it in the book 'Poirot: the greatest detective in the world' by Mark Aldridge. It is a short story that later was adapted into a novel length story (The mystery of the blue train). I had not realised that the TV Series Poirot had done an episode for both the short story and the full novel, something they had originally tried to avoid.
Based on the Mark Aldridge Poirot book, I'd started a project to reread the Poirot novels in order and then read the entry in Poirot: the greatest detective in the world and watching any TV or movie adaptation I could find of the story. As there is a TV adaptation of this short story as well as the book, I wanted to reread this story before watching the Poirot episode. Having read the longer novel not that long ago the story held little or no surprise, apart from how short it is and how quickly Poirot comes to the solution. Having read the short story, the book and the related portions of 'Poirot: the greatest detective in the world' adds a lot of fun, as you can see the potential the short story had as a longer novel but you also see that certain elements of the novel feel bolted on, some of which is fixed for the TV adaptation.
It's a 3 star story as it is a lot of fun, though short, and it is great to see how Poirot very quickly arrived at the truth of the matter.

A mystery by the master of Golden Age Detective fiction. The daughter of a wealthy American is found murdered on the Plymouth Express. Her jewelry case is missing. Japp suspects her husband, but is there another man in the picture, or is the murderer someone else entirely? Only the "little grey cells" will tell. Christie fans will not be disappointed.
