I was going to give this 3.75 stars because the narration is confusing and takes a bit to get used to since it often switches between timelines and narrators. The ending was great and has convinced me to read the next book, though, so I’m giving it 4.25 stars.

An interesting take on the dark academia genre though I would call this more of a murder mystery with some dark academia in it - Alex Stern is not in a secret society, she is the “law and order” for them (vague take). I ultimately think this was trying so hard to be an adult book that it was over complicated and confusing, but I had fun and I’m excited for the sequel!

i really enjoyed this book, and the worldbuliding was impeccable. the only thing i would say is that the last couple of chapters and 'the big reveal' seemed to come out of nowhere, but i did like it. i can't wait to read hell bent.

This books needs some content warnings. There's domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual humiliation.

This book wasn't at all what I was expecting, but that wasn't a bad thing. It's about secret societies at Yale. The story is well written. The jumps between timelines are well done, though there were a few times I got lost and had to back up to figure out what happened.

The story was very interesting: what if you could see ghosts and no one believed you, so it ruins your life... Until it gets you a free ride to a premier Ivy League University.

The plot moves along at a good pace. I never really felt like it was dragging, but it also wasn't action all the time. There's magic, ghosts, intrigue, humans being humans (for good and bad), college parties, murder investigations. It's a fascinating story.

And the ending? Perfect. I went to the library the minute it opened the next day to get the sequel!

It's a good read, but heed the content warnings. They are in context with the story. They aren't necessary (and I'm increasingly annoyed that they are used as plot devices) but they don't stick out as egregious either.

Was definitely engaged in the mystery and will most likely pick up the next one but for some reason I don't feel satisfied? Perhaps the rapid unraveling of the plot at the end of the novel came to quickly for me to properly absorb, but the sprint and then abrupt stop isn't working for me at the moment. We introduced a lot of concepts way too fast in my opinion (
demon Darlington? soul eating? the shit about the wheel??
).

Really enjoyed the characters and the world building, could have done without the sexual assault in my opinion but thankfully nothing was extremely graphic. Do look up content warnings before reading please, going in blind was perhaps not the best choice.
