the setting (late 900s/mid christianization of the british isles) was refreshing and intersting. i enjoyed how the author wove the two narratives together and had them meet at the end. wasnt sure when i started if i could get invested but im glad i stuck out those first few chapters and will definitely be getting into the sequel.

I’m not well versed in Ireland’s history but I loved this book! I think it’s a story that will follow me around, coming up to randomly remind me of Brian Boru. It’s inspired me to look into Ireland’s history more and those are my favorite books to read. I recommend giving this a read if you like Mists of Avalon, the Last Kingdom, or just some subtle magic thrown into historical fiction.
The joy of this story is how slowly everything is built up and truths are revealed. You need patience to read this book, but your patience will be rewarded.
I liked both our POV characters. They were so different and both brought such different things to the story, and I honestly couldn't pick a favorite. I liked Gormflaith's unapologetic cunning and Fodla's compassion and relative naivety. I usually dislike when the two POV's are so separate but I didn't mind it here. I think having them in closer proximity for Book 2 will be very entertaining.
I think the world feels very fleshed out because it draws on a real historical time period. I like the tidbits we get of magic, and I'm hoping this aspect gets to be explored more later in the series.

I loved this… historical fantasy I want to call it? Whatever it’s called, it was great… loved the two FMCS from the drop… lots going on with the magic folk… still learning who they are and what they are… tons of political intrigue… and battles and growth in what sounds like some real sounding Irish history… don’t know much of it but feel like I’ve heard of Brian Boru before…. Regardless will definitely be continuing this series … this was great fun!

It was written well! It was also a bit difficult to get through and I had some problems with the main characters.
