This was a fun novella that I read very quickly. I always love discovering new festive classics and the farce evoked the era fantastically.
Moderate: Infidelity
Minor: Domestic abuse and Suicide

Not the Christmas story I grew up with concerning Christmas Eve events, but this one is more fun. Love, betrayal, a witch, and a devil all in a Christmas story? The best Christmas stories to me are a little spooky or a little sweet, and this one is both, so I’m sold. Culturally specific holiday tales posed a unique flavor that the standard “Night Before Christmas” hair doesn’t have. I never knew a Russian / Ukrainian writer gave the world a great Christmastime story like this with even lessons included (if you think about it all), and now I need to read more cultures’ holiday tales in the future. What a treat for children of Russia and Ukraine to grow up with this kind of literature!
