Slow, gentle reverberations echoed against my heart sending up an increasing, swelling cascade response to my eyes. Tears of gratitude fell for Steinbeck’s expansion and retelling of a timeless theme.

East of Eden is a magnificent generational story that describes psychological effects of our nurturing environment on an individual and framed by the deconstructed Biblical tale of Cain and Abel.

Steinbeck’s astounding vision of each human being as a universe within a cosmos of humanity is unparalleled. He accomplishes this with a simple approach that does not proselytize. Instead, he tells stories within stories until they overlap and weave through each other enriching the past, present and future.

I will never forget his secret word.

This is a masterpiece.

My favorite of all of the Steinbeck that I've read...and I am not just saying that because of the lead characters' surname.
