I’m not one to usually give scathing book reviews but HOW did this book get so many five stars?!? How? The “gripping” part of this book didn’t start until 89 percent on my kindle and even then I wouldn’t call it gripping. Too many characters and perspectives that seemed to not make sense or connect to the main plot, dragged on storyline for most of the book, and still left with things unanswered (I.e what did her father do that was so horrible)? Too many storylines and things happening that weren’t integral to the ending. I would normally have not finished a book I disliked but I really wanted to see how this all connected in the end. To me it was not worth it and I would not recommend this book, unfortunately.
Enjoyable book. Book unpacks the story quite well and I like that the lead character isn't perfect. Interesting cast of characters too.

Unread shelf project 2025: book 5.
This was the first of a series and whoooooboy. The story was good, the writing was decent - it included a lot of slang from the area, which I found that I liked as it added flavor to the story. The pacing was definitely off but I feel like that’s one of the harder things to do “correctly.” The ending was rushed, but most of the loose ends were addressed and the ones that weren’t are appropriate for a plot arc that can span the series.

Loved this new book by Liz Mistry, the first in a new series. It is up to the same high standards as her Gus McGuire series. A thrilling book, keeping me engrossed the whole time. I just wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next. Loved the characters. Can't wait for the next book in the series
I have been a little disappointed in this book, it has been a pleasant read. Although, it wasn’t as suspenseful as initially made out. The characters are likeable and the plot is interesting. However, I was expecting more thriller and suspense.
Liz Mistry is a new name for me in the crime writing field. Last Request is the first (I presume) of a new detective Nikita Parekh. If this first book is anything to go by then I’m looking forward to reading more about the detective.
Nikita Parekh isn’t particularly a good mother. She rests most of her children on her mother and boyfriend. Her focus on life is her work, which she tirelessly throws herself into. Her faithful work partner Sajid puts up with a lot from her. In the first few scenes she’s called to a body found in a car park. Finding it’s a skeleton she throws the work to the cold cases team. Little does she know that the body is someone she once knew…
Nikita still lives in her childhood area. Where most police officers would have moved out of the estate, Nikita has stayed. It’s not a nice place to live, drugs are rife, yet she loves the area. Throughout the book Nikita struggles with everything that is thrown her way, coping in the only way she knows, protecting her family and bringing scumbags to justice.
It’s a good read. At times, I thought I was reading a sequel as the events of the past sound like a good story (maybe a prequel is coming?). At first this made me want more of the backstory, but as the plot thickens (
Gus McGuire is a hard act to follow, but Liz Mistry has done it again with her new detective DS Nikita Parekh.
This book (hopefully the first in a new series) is once again set in Bradford and even though I do know the city, Ms Mistry describes it so well that even if you’ve never been there you feel like you know it.
Our protagonist is a complex character, who just jumps off the page. She’s a strong, no-nonsense single mother, with a chaotic family life, but often rubs people up the wrong way. She’s not totally likeable, but she did grow on me as the story progressed. The supporting characters were all well written and believable. I liked the relationship Nikki had with her partner, Sajid.
The well plotted story builds slowly, with the first twist coming fairly early, and it kept me guessing throughout. I thought I’d figured out who the killer was but I was totally wrong! Hopefully we’ll be meeting Nikki Parekh again very soon!
Edit: Have just listened to the Audible version and the narration by Shaheen Khan adds another layer of authenticity to the story. Highly recommended!

3.5 stars. I had not read this author’s prior series but looked forward to this book. DS Nikita Parekh Is your typical damaged protagonist. There is a big back story which is hinted at in this book, which is the first in this series. I both loved Nikita and frequently wanted to smack her due to her terrible treatment of her daughter and partner. I did appreciate the cultural diversity of the characters and that there were two gay couples. I would definitely read more in the series if they come.
