This was such an ADORABLE little book! Not only is the cover so gorgeous that I want to blow it up and put it on my wall as a poster, the story itself was pretty engaging, even for a grown up like me.

The tale starts out with a brief rundown of the rules of this mermaid world. Mermaids receive their human legs on their 13th birthday -- and can never actually go on land *before* this time, or else their memories will be wiped clean and they will become human. A mermaid, over age 13, can go on land and use her legs, but if she stays for more than 48 hours, she will lose her tail and become human. Finally, a mermaid and human may only fall in love and bear children if the King and Queen allow, and the children will thus be half mermaid and can inhabit either water or land (but they can *NEVER* tell anyone about the mermaids!)

So, in this first installment we meet Shyanna, a young mermaid who wants to enter a singing competition in order to inspire her mother to love music again... a passion she lost after the disappearance of her husband, presumed to have been a result of humans hearing his song and capturing him in their nets. Shyanna thinks she has a pretty great shot at a win, until she meets her greatest competition, a pretty mermaid who is new to town... and who soon inspires jealousy in Shyanna that threatens to destroy her best friendships.

Has winning now become part of Shyanna's preoccupation with perfection rather than a help for her mother?

Cute, cute, cute... I really enjoyed this one, and I'm looking forward to beginning the second book, right away!

(I did receive a copy of this story for review purposes, although my opinions are not in any way influenced by the manner in which the work was received!)
