I always enjoy an Eve and Roarke story. The formula has become pretty predictable, but still entertaining.

J.D.Robb's writing is so addictive--it's like some of the drugs mentioned in the In Death series. Once again, we have a superb crime thriller and, though many may say the well-known characters and setting and phrasings are old or tedious, Robb propels the reader to the edge of their seat, waiting to find out just what Eve will do to bring justice. As she always does.

i always like when roarke comes out to help eve with cases in the wild. wasn’t a fan of this particular gang related case. i liked the beginning where eve was thinking about taking a cold case , i thought it would be interesting but oh well.

🥸

“Need a few more minutes for the internal monologue?” he asked, the Irish in his voice just adding more charm.
“It’s probably the most sensible conversation I’ll have all night.”

“Okay, hope you have a kick.”
“A kick at what?” Eve wondered as Quilla headed off.
“I think it means have a good time. Which should speak to you,” Roarke added, “as you enjoy kicking things.”

“Did you go out in this today?”
“I had marketing.”
“That explains the reports of a flying skeleton.”

“Yeah, then we’ll take a trip to Wet Dreams.”
“Darling Eve, life with you is a never-ending series of them.”
“Funny.”

“Jesus, I should arrest you.”
“Promise you will when we get home.” He leaned in to kiss her. “You know how it thrills me.”

“I’m never going to whack your balls with a shock stick to get you off.”
“It’s difficult to find the proper words to express my gratitude for that.”
“Okay. And I don’t want you clamping any weird toys on my nipples.”
“I can agree to that.”
“Okay then. We’re good.”
“We’re very good.” He kissed her again. “Lights out.”
“I’m not eating frog, either.”
“Off the menu. Go to sleep.”

“If you fucked me over, I’m a cop. I know how to make you pay without letting it show. Like, the one where I tranq your wine, dress you in a diaper and pasties, get you in your office, and transmit the image globally.”
“You’ve given this some thought.”
“Just in my free time.”

“There’s the one where I coat the inside of all your boxers with a biological that causes your works to develop festering boils.”
It made him wince. “Christ Jesus, you obviously have far too much free time.”

“For him I have the stick up his ass surgically removed, and without it, his whole body collapses into a puddle of ghoul.”
She tossed her coat over the newel post. “You’ll be too busy with festering boils to have him reanimated.”

“You want to walk outside, in the dark, to look at a hole in the ground?”
“I do, yes.” To get her away from the board and her thoughts for a few minutes, Roarke took her hand. “After all, it’s our hole in the ground.”

“She saw the hole, a sort of oval, about twenty feet around, and the muscular digger parked nearby. Crossing to it with him, she looked down. Ten feet deep, maybe.
“You could bury a lot of bodies here.”
“Let’s try water lilies instead.”

“Peabody, Detective Delia.” She sat across from him. “Also known as your worst nightmare.”

“When you put it that way.”
“You could put it this way.” She lifted his hands, pressed them to her breasts.
“You’re definitely feeling better.”
“Yeah. You’re so pretty. I’m glad nobody punched you in the face.” She leaned down, brushed her lips over his cheeks. “Dreamcake.”

Another great read from JD Robb in the In Death series. I would not recommend starting here, the overall character story-lines are built over the series so jumping in at book 48 in the series means a lot of confusion. When a family member of a colleague is found dead of an apparent overdose, Eve and Roarke jump in to gang territory tracking leads and unraveling a mystery that leads back to the precinct. Can they find culprit before secrets are exposed and more lives are at risk? I love the humor and the heart in all of these stories, a great continuation of the series and a mystery that keeps you guessing.

It took me a while to finish this because real life happened, and because I kept picking it up and then stopping for a couple of days in between, so I can't say I enjoyed the whole experience of reading this book. But Eve and Roarke will always be a comfort read to me no matter what. Also, I'm biased so the day I'll have rated an In Death book less than 4 stars, well, I just hope that won't ever happen. :)

If I could give this book zero stars, I would. I've read and own every single book in this series, but the last few years have been so disappointing, that I checked this title out of the library. I refuse to buy any more JD Robb books. It was boring and could have ended 200 pages prior. I also believe that her publisher must pay people to write good reviews because there is no way anyone could have anything good to say about this garbage.

I read maybe the first ten or twenty back in the day. Picked this up and while I still like Eve and Roarke, this didn't grip me the way the first books did so long ago.

The first time I've not read a Dallas story on release day - this one just didn't catch for me, and I don't know why!
