An Incredibly sad story.
 the murder of two teenage girls happened 8 years ago, was never really looked into by the small town police force, and everyone blamed the lady who's property they were found on.

Each Moon descendent has a different gift - herbs, visions, scents - and the last Moon girl inherits the farm & decides to clear her grandmother's name before selling the property & returning to her life in New York City. 
She questions the townspeople, reopens old wounds, and eventually figures out who did it.

Mixed in with the murder plot is reconciliation, a journey to find herself, wisdom from unlikely sources, and a tiny bit of romance. 

I highlighted quite a few bits from this book, mostly about loss, love, and forgiveness.

Review of The Last of the Moon Girls by Barbara Davis: 

⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ 

 

Eight years ago Lizzy Moon left behind her family, her legacy and the land that generations of Moon women tended.  Lizzy wanted to create a new life where she could blend in and where no one knew her and whispered about her family.  She thought she was doing just that in New York City until she found out that her beloved grandmother, Althea, passed away leaving Moon Girl Farm to her.  When Lizzy returns with intentions to sell the estate, she also has to confront the looming tragedy of two young girls found on the property almost a decade ago, and the accusations against her late grandmother.  Wanting to clear Althea’s name and after finding out about the initial botched investigation by the police, Lizzy sets out to do her own investigative work only to stir up the town and put someone on edge.  Seems like the people of Salem Creek aren’t that much different than their ancestors hundreds of years before them. 

 

I love trying to play detective and seeing if I can solve a mystery so this book was right up my alley.  A mystery that read like a police procedural AND the added witchy element.  It was reminiscent of Practical Magic and The Vine Witch - both prior book club picks!  While I found myself immersed in the murder mystery, the finale of who actually did it was underwhelming and felt more of a necessary thread that needed to be tied up rather than the shocking reveal I was secretly hoping for.  That said, the storytelling was beautifully descriptive and the subplot was equally captivating.  The Last of the Moon Girls isn’t just a murder mystery - it also blends in family drama, second chances, self-discovery, magical realism and historical fiction - all woven together in a charming yet riveting story.
