A must-read for any visual designer. It's a perfect mix of practical advice and encouragement, and you finish the book feeling like Mike is your loving, protective (and maybe slightly disappointed in you) uncle that really wants you to do the right thing.

Some universal insights in here for non-designers, but the one I will probably remember most is: you are responsible for every piece of work you put out into the world.

This book had me hooked from the first page:

"So I wrote you a book. It has a spine and by the time you're done reading so will you."

Gold.

The chapters on Presenting Design (7) and Managing Feedback (8) were excellent: to boil it down, if you're not getting good feedback from clients it's your fault. You need to guide the conversations to get the feedback you need, and help them become comfortable with the design decisions you've made.

This book is essentially the Clean Coder[1] for designers. Applicable to anybody attempting to set up their own freelancing/consultation company.

I would highly recommend reading this. Adding it to my favorites shelf.

Fantastic. Clearly and humorously explains all sorts of social predicaments for designer and other professionals.

This is not a design book. It is a business book for designers. More geared towards someone running their own company than to freelancers, but many of the points can also be applied across the board. Monterio writes with great economy and humour, and there were some excellent take-aways from this book.

I feel smarter for having read this book. quick and easy...something for everyone, even seasons pros and those who are not active designers. Anyone in client services should read this.

I read this book 10 years ago when it came out and I had just started my own studio. 10 years later it resonates more, I've taken lots of the advice but embarrassingly forgot some bits that i really should have done. No matter where you are in a design career there's something here for you, and it bears repeated reading.
