I thought the mystery was good, the characters were well developed, and the ending was satisfying, but something still feels missing. I recommend, but I was never super invested in this book while reading.

The Girl on the Train had a slow start, but got really exciting about half way through. The end was really climactic and unexpected. Told from the perspective of three women: Rachel, Anna, and Megan. The characters were all very flawed, but still sympathetic. Except Anna. I did not like Anna nor feel bad for her. Overall, I would recommend it.

Wow, this was so poorly written and translated. But the story was kind of interesting. Not great, but I did finish it. The characters were also terrible. Again, I finished it, because it was somewhat interesting. I don't know. It was okay.

Really enjoyable story. A good mystery and not crazy scary like Patterson.

I was a bit scared to read this after the disaster that was Gone Girl, because it was similarly held in high regard by the public and, 1.) I deeply distrust public opinion on books and 2.) I didn't get the hype even after reading Gone Girl. But like the protagonist Rachel, I am quite fond of London trains and fantasizing about people I've never met, so I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

Put simply, I liked it. It kept me guessing (thrillers fall flat for me when they're predictable - cough, cough Gone Girl), and I flew through it in 3 days. The characters are interesting - not deep or complex, but you root for Rachel, flawed as she is. This book is a domestic thriller but it celebrates women, even if in a slightly disturbing context.

Alcohol always seems like a cop-out device to me, and this book was no exception, but it isn't high literature so I'm fine with it. Also, these books make marriage an even more terrifying concept.

Psychological Drama

What bothers me about many thrillers is that they often seem completely unrealistic and contrived to create a "shocking, surprising twist." With this book, I didn't feel at all like it was one of those stories that delves into the deepest, sickest recesses of the human psyche.

Some readers complain that the resolution was predictable—at some point, yes, it was, but that's not necessarily the sole focus of the book. The overall atmosphere was consistently really good: very dark, oppressive, sometimes too oppressive, depressing, often thrilling. I also liked the writing style; it was very easy to skim through without seeming undemanding, told from multiple perspectives, and above all, I never found it long-winded or boring, so I read it in two days.

A classic thriller that had me hooked from the first chapter. It leaves you wanting to know more page after page. Highly recommend!
