4.5 stars. Engaging story, well-developed characters. I would have liked more of an afterward.
Meh.

I stayed up way too late reading this book. It was pretty slow till midway through, then I couldn't put it down. I guessed the plot twist about three quarters of the way through, but was too committed to finishing it to quit.
What really stood out to me in this book is how "reality" is so warped and rewritten by the way we tell events back to ourselves; how no one but a person who has really loved us can so easily crush us; and how painful and terrible it is to live with and recover from addiction. There were several passages in the book that were close to unbearable to read. Or maybe my sentimentality comes from reading too many extremely depressing books at the same time.
I can't imagine anyone willingly sitting through a movie of this book, having read it. Though Emily Blunt is pretty fantastic.

This was okay. I liked it, I guess. I'm feeling kind of "meh" because so many critics compared it to Gone Girl, which feels so wrong. It's a mystery about a woman disappearing... and that's the only similarity. I found myself extremely frustrated with the characters for being so stupid.
