The book itself regarding the writing of the story and characters as well as those things itself was good. It just wasn’t for me and though I often enjoy dark romance I just couldn’t get comfortable how they sexualised her fear. I get that spark that comes with a little fear play but I feel like sometimes the female mc was just straight up frightened and I couldn’t get behind how someone would find joy in that or how she could be turned on herself. Also a big point for me is the miscommunication I mean if they would’ve just talked a lot of things would’ve turned out drastically different. In the end it definitely is a good book I simply couldn’t identify with the morals of the characters which made me not being able to enjoy the book and also not read any further books in the series.

Corrupt is a dark romance novel written by the amazing Penelope Douglas and depicts the twisted story of Erika and Michael. For as long as she can remember, Rika has always had a fascination with Michael, her boyfriend's terrifyingly sexy older brother, however, he has never shown an ounce of interest in her existence... until one day, he finally did. Fast forward a few years and some questionable choices later, Rika finds herself in his territory...unprotected...yet again.

I need to start off by saying that this book is so fucking awesome and is the perfect example of a dark romance novel. I found this book from a recommendations video from the channel 'moretomary' (which I highly recommend you watch) and was my first real taste of dark romance. I have to say that the motifs and themes of the novel caught me off guard and wasn't something that I was expecting but I was thoroughly pleased with anyway, however, this book is NOT for the faint of heart as it grapples topics such as mental health, addiction, sexual assault, etc. If you feel very sensitive about these topics or are triggered by them in any way, I would not recommend this book for you. I really, REALLY loved this book because I feel as though the plot was developed very well and was very effective in keeping my attention the whole way through due to the constant tone of mystery and suspense emitted from the pages of this book. Time jumps occur consistently throughout the book but I don't feel as though it takes away from the story, in fact, I think it enhances the context of the story which is something I find that most books don't depict very well when it comes to time jumps. The characters in this story are *chefs kiss*. Rika and Michael's chemistry is just fucking insane and I don't even know how they weren't involved with each other before, like I could smell their sexual tension from the bottom of the Marina trench. AND THE SEX... girl don't even get me started on that shiiiittttttt. I would be lying to you if I didn't say that I was feelin a bit funky while reading them extra saucy scenes. Very rarely have I read books where sex scenes are so overly explicit and written extremely well, like I honestly wish I could write scenes as good Penelope does. I also want to mention that this book is the FIRST book in the 'Devils Night' series (which you HAVE to read as well) but can be read as a stand-alone without any cliffhangers.

What's up bitchesssss!!!! Below this will NOT be spoiler-free so please proceed below with caution, but save yourself the hassle and just read the damn book because it's fucking sick (but for now, enjoy...)

SO, I am not going to go too deep into this spoiler portion because I don't want to take away from the most important aspects of this book, but pretty much Rika and Michael come from BIG cash...I'm talking filthy fucking rich babe. Money's best friend is privilege and these boys got it ALL. Michael's one of the Four Horsemen along with his best friends Kai, Damon, and Will, and together they annually celebrate the eve of Halloween by fucking up the town because if you've got money, then why tf not. On one particular year, Michael notices our girl Rika and decides to bring her along for the celebration (to which she fucking freaks out and pretty much salivates all over him the entire time) with his friends and hundreds of other horny/restless teenagers, however, something happens to Michael's three best friends that gets them incarcerated. Long story short when they all get released a few years later they're looking for vengeance and it is just oh so convenient that Rika happens to be in their proximity while attending college.
