This was just…so dense. I’m really fascinated by the ideas presented here but reading it was like trying to swim through quicksand.

The author is well informed and knows his subject well, but I felt like I was reading a dissertation. I was easily distracted while reading and had to remind myself to keep reading.

McNeill even admits that evidence is somewhat unreliable or downright impossible to find, but he still makes some interesting points and the book is at least worth reading if one is looking to read a 300 page chronicle of international infectious disease and epidemics (however narrow that subset of people is).

i read this for my spring term class and it was a bit average. interesting stuff but the author jumps around too much. it would be nicer if it was in somewhat chronological order because it was hard to connect the dots at times. it was interesting learning about microparasitical and macroparasitical relationships throughout history tho and i feel like it can be applied to present day as well
