4.5 ⭐️
Really great! Lovable characters, interesting storyline and funny humour.
Very politically heavy, but a nice glumpse into gender theories of the times. Scary how some pages could of been drawn today.. it seems like no progress has happened..
The ending was a little abrupt

Kortom: episch.

Iconic. It's incredible to read something that so very much centers lesbians and their stories. Very interesting from a historical perspective, too.

I see this book as a snapshot into lesbian life at the time. I know I'm really showing my youth here but I read this as almost a historical piece. That being said it is veryyy funny and very relatable. It's crazy because lesbians really are still like that! Just before I bought the book I had the exact same conversation mo and lo had in that first strip (sadly I was mo). The art is also wonderful, I love Bechdel's art style.
EDIT:
was just thinking about this book again...literally changed my life

Oh goddess, where to start? How to sum up a book that compiles comic strips going back to 1987? Well, I guess that kinda sums it up. What a fascinating adventure watching the progression of dyke culture, LGBTQ issues and priorities, feminism, and liberalism over what's essentially my entire lifetime. It's like watching 30 years of newsreels all at once. No summations, just the actions and reactions in real time. And yes, there are characters that I despise, intentional distilled caricatures without depth or nuance, but what's lacking sometimes laterally is more than made up for longitudinally. Bechdel discovers her characters as time goes on, just as we do, and it's glorious to watch. To me, if there's such a thing as the one must-read dyke culture book, this surely must be it, a place where literature, culture, theory, and history beautifully converge and unfold over a lifetime.

quintessential comics, comics 101, alison bechdel you're amazing - I can't help but notice the influence of this book on almost every queer comic strip artist I read, and no wonder! bechdel has nailed strip comics through her dry humour and extensive political commentary, her art is very smooth, she's incredibly clever and she writes about such lesbian things, even now I can see myself and my friends in the characters - five stars!!!
