My love of the characters -- formed while reading the first book -- is the only thing that kept me going through this book, which was SO SLOW. The last few chapters are better, and I will continue onto the next book...

Travis said nothing. Instead he faced her, Beltan on the bench between them. Each rested one hand on the knight's chest, then with the others brought the two halves of the coin together.
"Let's go home, Grace."
And all shadows were banished as the world filled with silver light.

YOU DID NOTTTT END IT LIKE THAT. OH MY FUCKING GOD…

I first read this series when I was in high school and college, and it stood out to me at the time because it had so many different types of people in the story. It was the first fantasy I encountered with lgbtqia+ characters, there were people from all different races as main characters, and disability was an integral part of the plot. Some of the tropes and style feel a little dated on a reread, there are definitely some things that don't read as particularly progressive 20 years on from the writing, and this second installment is... not good. But the overall series is still one I come back to periodically because I love the world and the characters. If you're trying this out and you don't love this particular book, it really does get much better with the 3rd story!
