Such a horrifying and tender mediation on individual and collective struggles with grief, suffering, and trying to make sense of a world that kills a young boy like Dong-ho. As much as this is a novel about Dong-ho, it is also about the legacy and trauma still unraveling from the Gwangju uprising. In a sense, can Dong-ho’s story ever be completely told?

Indescribably good.
Hands down one of the best books I have read. Possible my favourite book I read in 2021:)

absolutely gut wrenching to read but i’m not sorry i did — han kang layered each perspective of these events artfully and with such care. what deborah smith said in her introduction really stuck with me: “her novel, then, is both a personal and political response to these recent developments, and a reminder of the human acts of which we are all capable, the brutal and the tender, the base and the sublime.”
