I love how it’s split into three parts for each of the characters own journeys. I feel like other people might find the age gaps weird but the love between each character really makes those things feel like the least important thing in the moment.

This shit makes me want to love like they all do, the dialogue went hard😭

I was so excited to find out there was a sequel for CMBYN and ugh. Aciman has undoubtedly a beautiful style of writing that really draws me in to literally anything that he puts on paper. I wanted so much more from this book. The majority of it just felt so unnecessary and there were too many dimensions added to his original characters I just couldn’t get behind, it made the story unrealistic. In my head CMBYN is a stand alone and this doesn’t exist. Oopsies.

I did almost give up on this book; the opening chapter feat. Elio's dad and a woman he meets on a train felt... very uncompelling. I wasn't interested in their budding relationship, and frankly, reading it, being witness to their back and forth, their sexy little flirtations and verbal banter felt super awkward. I found them insufferable rather than endearing. Odd little snippets that felt more natural, in observation, in a stray thought. But overall I struggled and skimmed.

Overall, I think this book was marketed somewhat misleadingly; clearly it's meant to appeal to people who want more Elio and Oliver, but (spoiler) this is glossed over, not without intensity of feeling, which might seem like a contradiction, but the moment is so very very brief. Similarly, the section of the detective mystery, Elio's relationship with Michel is also a bit of a shrug.

I struggled with Call Me By Your Name as a book, dug the audio, loved the movie... I would have like to see this pared right down into a slender novella. I also got the sense that there were some clever clever things happening that if I had a better understanding of music might have given me an 'aha!' moment and perhaps I would have taken more away from these stories. But as it stands, I came away unmoved.
