Was reading to my child but we stopped picking it up
Readers of the KJV won't have any problem reading the 17th century lingo of PILGRIM'S PROGRESS. For everybody else, there may be an initial period of having to get used to the different pace and anachronistic words in a fantasy book published in the 21st century.
John Bunyan's success as a storyteller lies in his ability to pinpoint exactly what makes Christians weak and what makes Christians strong. He uses the thin veil of allegory (extremely thin) by leading his main characters through places like the Slough of Despond and Vanity Fair. He also presents trials and temptations in the guise of people, such as the memorable Mr. Worldly Wise Man, the Giant Despair, and my personal favorite, Talkative. Through the allegorical setting and characters, Bunyan offers commentary on the difficulties and perils of living an authentic Christian life. And those difficulties have not changed in the roughly 340 years since PILGRIM'S PROGRESS was penned.
PILGRIM'S PROGRESS entertains in that it engages the reader to think through the temptations that Bunyan describes, and to read on to see how they play out. Along the way, Bunyan dots his narrative with worthwhile comments:
-0- “Dark clouds bring waters, when the bright bring none.”
-0- “The man that takes up religion for the world will throw away religion for the world.”
-0- “The world does not easily or readily give up its citizens."
-0- "I have seen many cry out against sin in the pulpit who yet abide it well enough in their own heart, home, and manner of life."
Section 10 of the book (almost the end), in my opinion, is the most powerful, for Bunyan deals frankly with the fear of death that haunts many Christians. The journey through the River of Death attains a level of prose worthy of any piece of English literature.

I guess I just don't like allegories that are quite that obviously allegories. I read about the first quarter and then skipped to the end when I realized I just couldn't get into it. I think maybe I would like discussing it in a book group or something, but I didn't enjoy it on my own. Oh well. . .
