I enjoyed getting to understand the style of the text, and appreciate it for its undeniable beauty. I did, in particular love the opening apology, in verse - such pomp!

There were a lot of words.
Those who know me will appreciate my preference for the concise over the use of a lot of words.
Still, quite inspirational and deserves a second, more thoughtful reading... at some point.

Wow, this book was truly a masterpiece. Although at times I couldn’t fully grasp the understanding I wanted, I ended it feeling so fulfilled and inspired. As we follow this journey with Christian, we see how every trial holds deeper meaning. Now if anyone doesn’t know a Christian’s own journey, or the struggles that comes along the way of life, committed to God. Then you would probably read this book and think it meaningless. But the sad thing is, it’s cause our culture is so full of meaningless activity that people can’t even see beyond the actual concept. And accept the fact that we need the Lord to get through EVERYTHING. And that’s literally this book. This book is literally a prime example of why we need God, and why we need to seek him with everything we have. So if you say you hate this book, it’s not because you hate the author, the style etc. you probably just relate to a character so much, you see the lack in your own life. But isn’t that the purpose of a book? To change you? This being said I don’t really care if you have this book or love it. Either way I know it affected everyone in some way or another. And you can never be affected by something that doesn’t exist. So after this long rant. What I’m trying to say is, there is a reason God gave John Bunyan this dream. That completely helped him write this book. And I’m sure glad it’s effecting people the way it should :) anyway we see in the end it’s always worth it. Yes life is a trail, but never losing sight of God gets us the biggest reward beyond the small things of this life. Things of this world, that are “fulfilling” in the moment but truly never fill the void each one of us has in our hearts. The only void God can fill.

This book was on my "To Read" list for several reasons. At one time, it was second only to the Bible, it has always been in print since it published and it has been on various book lists as a significant contribution to religious literature. (One of the most recent lists to include it is PBS's "The Great American Read.") My last reason is because I needed to read an allegory for a book club that I am a member of. So, read it I did.

But, boy, did i get bogged down. Making myself read this was about as hard as getting a cat to sit down in a tub of water to take a bath. Yep, it was THAT hard for me! It wasn't because it was extremely difficult to read because Bunyan actually presented his moral story in, what I am assuming to be, an entertaining way for the 17th century. He was writing about the dreams he had in which he saw and knew all about what was going on. Plus, there were giants and swamps and murders and the Angel of Death, as well as Faith, Mercy, GreatHeart and Honesty. (Bunyan names his characters after their moral characteristics.)

Anyway, I can see where it can be uplifting for some people and there are some good moral stories, but I found it hard to see past some of the out-dated judgments, sexism and racism. But kudos to Mr. Bunyan for doing an extraordinary job of presenting his religious beliefs and faith while languishing in jail for expressing those things!

So good. Really makes you think about the christian walk. It's pretty much an allegory for different struggles and temptations christian's face throughout their life.
