Eyes Turned Skward by Rebecca Yarros
Flight & Glory Book Two
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
We have the story of Paisley & Jagger.
The Major of Military Flight Schools daughter. She suffers from a genetic heart condition which took her sister life 2 years earlier. She's dating her sisters bestfriend Will who is in military flight school under her father. Jagger saves her life, when she was drowning at the beach & from there everything changes.
I'll be honest...
I LOVED Jagger!! His devotion, kindness, spunk, carisma, ego - all of it. He was absolutely GREAT for an MMC. What fell for me was Paisley. Like come on... your sister died from doing dumb things that can affect her heart of which she didnt tell anyone about. And she has the same heart defect but avoids all medical advice from doctors. I also didnt like the miscommunication because of her. I feel the FMC let this story down for me.
Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed this read (especially because it was narrated by Teddy Hamilton)! And i'm continuing the series :) But was just lacking growth for me.

I love Rebecca Yarros's writing and enjoyed this book. The main reason why it's not a 5 star read is because it uses one of my least favorite tropes- the main characters withholding important, life or death information from each other for like 80% of the book. It became so frustrating and annoying.
Fourth Wing fans: THIS IS THE BLUEPRINT FOR DAIN AETOS. Will Carter is GodFuckingDammitDain 1.0 and I feel like we should all be doing a dive through all RY older books as this is where she tested out all the plot lines and archetypes. This is also where RY developed her “miscommunication through withholding info/keeping secrets” trope. And actually I see a bit of Xayden and his mysterious backstory in Jagger too! I feel like if we go back and read her older work it will help us understand the Empyrean characters and what’s coming out way in Onyx Storm & beyond, maybe???
For everyone else: if you can get past the pet name “little bird” it’s a good read. There are a few plot holes at the end when her family just loses the strong personality and resolve they had the entire book instantly without any explanation or catalyst and we just ignore all the other problems built up. Butttt I liked the characters and was entertained so overall still liked the book!
