This was a heart-wrenching novel that gave me goosebumps. While the writing wasn't on par with Toni Morrison, it's easy to see that one day it might be. I can't wait to read more from Tracey Rose Peyton!

This is an unforgettable novel about an aspect of American slavery that is often ignored, the use of enslaved women as incubators for more enslaved people. Told in first-person plural, it lets us into the thoughts and fears and desires and strategies of a group of enslaved women whose owners push them into forced pregnancy and childbirth. This is an important novel, as strong as anything by Toni Morrison, and just as shattering. It's a work that is also particularly resonant today, as girls as young as 10 are being forced to carry and deliver their rapists' children. I want everyone to read this book, I want it in the schools, I want it taught in colleges, I want book groups to read it, I want it to be one of those city-wide reads, everything.

2.5 stars. I’m sad cause I really wanted to love this book. The content and plot was intriguing/rich but overall I felt the connection to the characters was not very deep and engaging. I think the novel might have clicked better had there been a more in-depth focus on a couple of the women.

Night Wherever We Go" is a powerful and brutal historical-fiction journey about a group of enslaved women in a failing plantation in Texas. The blurb will make you believe this book is about a rebellion, but it's not at all. It's a story about survival.

There are multiple POVs and storylines. I'd say Junie's story was the most compelling to me. As a debut novel, I thought this was expertly researched and descriptive. The most unforgettable part of this book was learning in depth the kind of dehumanization slaves suffered through. I knew of wet nurses and I knew of forced labor, but that's unfortunately just the tip of the iceberg. Our author does not shy away from shedding light to their underexplored history.

I also experienced one of those cool aha! moments when the cover of the book aligned with the plot.

I do wish there was a clear indication of the narration since it's multiple POVS. That is probably my biggest critique. The formatting and the pacing was off.
