I love picking up this author's books, he has a great skill in fully pulling you in to the community of a place. In this book that is more true than ever - as the reader journeys through the book they are given an insight into the loves, lives and deaths of the residents of a tiny village.
In such a short number of pages, you get to know the kinds of people this place creates, the way they fit together, what has stuck in their collective memory and seeped through the place, affecting everyone.
As with any multiple POV book, I personally preferred some over others. I would imagine this is heavily dependant on the reader as a person and their experiences because each and every one of them was well crafted.
Robert Seethaler continues to be an author I want to read more from - he has an ability to represent the humanness of experiencing an individual life, connected to so many others and the environment wer are surrounded by. The translations continue to be that version of simple that looks easy and is incredibly difficult to actually achieve.
One for the short book readers, for sure. If you haven't read A Whole Life by this author, that book continues to have a special place in my heart.

It‘s not you, it‘s me!

“The Field” is made up of a patchwork of people. Their collective voices, stories, emotions and quite literally their bodies too!
Seethaler once again subtly reminds of the beauty, in the ever day mundanity of our unremarkable, yet whole lives.
My only nit-pick if I had to have one, was that this doesn’t quite flow as smoothly as previous works I’ve read by him have. Perhaps it’s the constant alternating narrative, which just came across a trifle too stilted at times.
Nevertheless, I am constantly in awe of how this man can encapsulate so much, especially in so few pages!
