A fun fantasy romp in an imaginative world that, while keeping a lot of the traditional fantasy world tropes (nations inspired by European/asian counties, evil thieves guild, war with monsters of another race, mysterious magic system, pantheon of Gods), still kept me hooked and invested. At first it felt a little disjointed with each chapter feeling like individual D&D sessions, complete with encounters with a variety of NPCs, but the main story kept me interested enough to keep me going, especially once the motives of the characters are revealed piece by piece. Great world building! Kinch’s voice is a delight to read and brings such a fantastic levity to the circumstances of the story.

Very good performance by Buehlman. Very funny. Engaging. My only gripe might have to do with my own ability to parse fantasy races audibly without seeing them written down. Lots of races, nations, and individuals with fantasy names that all blended together and made the story a little difficult to follow.

There was just something missing from this book for me. It felt very flat and by the end I didn’t care about what was happening plot wise. I think for me there was world building done but in a weird way that I couldn’t process it; so this may be a me problem. There were so many names dropped throughout their journey that left me confused.
However, our main character was witty and great throughout which may be the reason I continue this series. And the magic system was a lot of fun and I enjoyed that. I’ll keep my eye out for the second book. At least I think there’s another one…
