Plot in this book takes a backseat to Kinch’s snark as he tells the harrowing tale of how he escaped several deadly situations. Other characters, particularly the more interesting ones on a surface level, have no development at all. It feels like someone decided to write a book about a character they played in a DND campaign, but they couldn’t much flesh out the other characters because they didn’t create them (or they were just NPCs). This book contains a lot of cursing and crude humor, which doesn’t bother me but there was a LOT. If you turned it into a drinking game for a couple chapters, you would be dead. It takes some of the humor out of it after you’ve read it so many times. I somewhat enjoyed the episodic nature of the book but it took me a long time to get through it. Also shoutout to the author for inserting his cat into the story, not an insult, he’s just so real for that. Every author with a cat should do that. /hj

WAOW! This was good! I came in with low expectations, and in one of my updates I said that the first person POV made me feel like this was a YA book even if the content is decidedly grim dark, but it really turned around halfway through the book. I'm not going to write a long review, I will just say this book is so sad and bleak at times, but also so damn beautiful. Two deaths in it are so harrowing yet poetic I had to just stop reading and digest it. Christopher Buehlman wasn't really on my radar before, I only knew about him from Between Two Fires, but now I will read ANYTHING he puts out. I also want to add I loved the magic in this world. Not bogged down by boring explanations like in a Sanderson novel, but explained just enough that it is a very compelling framework to explore. Absolutely loved the concept of tattooing spells on your body for later use. I bet this isn't the first time something like that has been done, but the only other time I've read it was in either Before They are Hanged or The Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie, so it was a pretty fresh idea for me, can't wait to steal that for a TTRPG campaign.

Onto The Daughters War now!

read this to get back in to fantasy books.
very funny, keeps your attention, dark in places, vibrant and interesting world. distinct and lovable main cast. also, self contained rather than needing to be a 3 book 1800 page epic, which is a breath of fresh air
