There’s three brilliant stories about the horrors of war, and one awful one about how great America is.

Some of the art is good, some a little iffy.

Finished this up the other night, and it was absolutely outstanding. HIGHLY recommend, even if you're not into the comic book genre. Offers a lot to think about the sacrifice, heroism, and patriotism of soldiers (from all sides) on the battlefield.

So... this is a hard one to rate.

See, there are 2 stories that were so touching in this collection. One by Paul Jenkins, based on a true story and one by Charles and Daniel Knauf (who have yet to wrong me, knock on wood). They do such a wonderful job at getting at this part of Steve's character. So often, he's the uptight soldier that thinks his way is the best way and everyone should listen to him because he is the arbiter of all that is just and good (this is bullshit. I love him but it's total bullshit). I've mostly read him in relation to the Avengers or down level crime, never in war zones.

This is a collection about Steve Rogers in different warzones. It's all about how he reacts in the thick of it, how he rallies the men around him and how he deals with the losses. There are a lot of losses in this book. What made me love those 2 stories was that they did a good job of showing what these soldiers mean to Steve. He fights because he can't bare to sit the battles out and he has the utmost respect for the men that fight alongside him. These 2 stories did a great job at showing what kind of toll that takes on Steve and how he had to keep moving.

That being said, I would certainly not recommend this collection.

There's an awful short story in here by Charles Hayman or something like that. He's on my list of enemies because not only was it boring as shit but there's a part when Cap just gleefully backhands a woman. She was a bad guy but Steve Rogers is not the type of man to just smugly smack women in the face. Screw you, dude. Not only that but the issue didn't age well and the art made Steve look like Barney Rubble. Not a recommend.

The other stories had some good introspection for Steve but they just weren't that memorable or entertaining. There was one that interested me because it was one of the few Marvel comics where a character didn't like Captain America. Steve made a call that didn't pan out and the guy suffers for it. It ends without him truly coming around to liking Steve and that was interesting.

The last issue was a waste of time but I enjoyed the ending lines. "I am a ghost of my country and my country is the ghost of me."

Pointless collection of pointless one~shots that don't really add anything to continuity.
