I’ve never been one for poetry, but I’m trying my best to read more of it and wanted to start with Rilke. Truthfully, it’s because one of his poems played before the credits of one of my favorite movies of last year (and really ever), Jojo Rabbit. And I’m glad that I did, because this was a fantastic collection of poems. The imagery was incredible and so many of the works were deep and impactful. I dog-eared a bunch of pages in this book for me to go back to, because even though I took my time and digested them works I know that I’ll want to revisit them in the future. I’ll also want to read more of Rilke’s works in the future too, because I’ve really enjoyed his style.

There's a lot of preening and angsty stuff in here, but there are a few wonderfully original lines as well.

I loved the individual poems, but couldn't get into Duino Elegies or The Sonnets to Orpheus. I think I will need to revisit them another time.

Having the German and English side by side was delightful. I'm using Duolingo to learn German so I could pick up a few words in the German text and the read the English on the next page.

"If you are a dreamer, I am what you dream.
But when you want to wake, I am your wish,
and I grow strong with all the magnificence
and turn myself into a star's vast silence
above the strange and distant city, Time."

I’ve read it once before and I’ll probably read it many times again.
