Too complicated. Mixed between fiction and not fiction

Intense but ultimately optimistic book about what it would take to turn the tide on climate change. Spoiler alert: it's the end of capitalism. Also geoengineering and rewilding and paying out people for their petro-wealth and blimps and massive investment in clean energy (and terrorism and mass death) and getting the central banks on board to invest in the long term future of civilization. It's like a lengthy (lengthy but absorbing and fast-reading) thought experiment. This is not a character-rich book although the handful of characters are sympathetic and they ground this book in humanity. There is a lot of econ in this book, and I admit that I skimmed those parts since I don't have a lot of background in the subject but this would be one heck of a way to learn about it if you wanted to.

It's not perfect, but it is astonishing and brilliant. Bold, ambitious, polyphonic and pluralistic. No dumbing down, and a lot of information dumped in a way that feels strange in other fiction, but here just works and strengthens it. Demonstrative of the inner challenges as well as social ones about activating the change necessary. Will need to re-read, and will enjoy re-reading. Think this is exactly the kind of book that Amitav Ghosh called for when he lamented the dearth of fiction effectively dealing with climate change.

Brutally inadequate causation for almost everything

This book took me forever to finish. It is a lot of climate change nonfiction told in a sci-fi fiction story. There are only a few characters that are found through out the book and one time witnesses are weaved between the story of those characters. Since I have read a fair amount of non-fiction regarding climate change, I was able to recognize some of the information he includes. The author is impressive with not only his understanding of climate change but politics and economics on a global level. I stuck with this book because of the quality of writing and information but definitely not a page turner for me.

I liked the premise but the lack of well developed characters and plots made this a boring read.
