I picked this up because someone compared it to the video game Until Dawn and I agree that is accurate. If you want to follow a group of friends in their 20s at some remote cabin/ski lodge in the snow with something lurking outside waiting to pick them all off, that's exactly what you're gonna get in this book. I was invested in the story the whole time, i enjoyed the audiobook, and i liked how the author chose to end the story too. Oh also, don't worry, there is no on-page harm to the cute husky dog in this book.

i actually really liked the ending but i need to know if

Well, I definitely enjoyed this more than the first book I read by this author. (I do have a soft spot for creature features, though.) I think my main criticism with this one is that there are way too many of the side vignettes. They're all decently written, but they started to distract from the main group—especially since there were some genuinely interesting relationship dynamics that I liked seeing explored even if there wasn't much "action". And, the vignettes ultimately took away some of the shock value when the creatures finally show themselves to the main group since we'd already seen so much of them.

This book was on its merry way to be a solid 4⭐️, it had so many things I liked: great setting, well chosen and well depicted creatures and slightly dumb yet lovable characters. However, the ending really threw me off, it felt like the author didn’t really know what to do with the loose threads and tried to make it “open ended” to fix it. Overall an enjoyable read but the ending was not the best

this book gave me flashbacks to my until dawn phase in the best way possible (me acting like that phase ever left me)

it was a cliche horror plot line but that was literally exactly what i wanted from this book, and the ending did genuinely give me chills and there were some really unnerving parts throughout!

I spent 11 years of my life living in Minnesota, one of the northernmost states of the US; and so, I intimately know the feeling of “biting cold” in my bones. The Shuddering by Ania Ahlborn takes me back to that endless snowscape, and then plunged me much further into an even deeper, darker, and gorier tundra where monsters lurk. Mhmmm… Delightfully frightful, just what I’m looking for to kick off my Spooktober.

Docked a star for a few minor details. Unhide spoilers if you care to read about some bored lady’s random complaints…
SpoilerWe got some common, been-done-to-death-and-twice-over-again tropes with the horror genre in this book, which I don’t care for but I’ve read enough horror to just let it wash over me. Specifically, the TSTL cast (too-stupid-to-live, literally running to one’s death, ugh). And also, the freaking-out-first, screaming/wailing females. I’m not surprised, I’m irritated. But we’ve been trained to accept these things since Stephen King’s The Shining, so what can ya do.

Overall, an enjoyable read. I’m not sure if I can handle this book if I’m still living in Minnesota!
