3.5 rounded up to 4, because I love a good isolation setting, and the creatures were fantastic. Ahlborn's description of the creatures, the setting, and the sense of isolation was truly creepy. I loved the "feel" of this book, and there were many moments where I felt I couldn't turn the pages fast enough: I needed to know what was going to happen.

Where I felt it was lacking was the mindless banter and conversations between the five main characters. It really didn't add to the overall development of these characters, and I kept skipping over paragraphs of fluff. If this book was about 30 pages shorter, it would've been close to 5 stars for me.

I really didn't want my first read of 2023 to be 2 stars but the only redeeming quality of this was the pace. I HATED the ending, finished the book out of spite, and there was no suspense. I felt like I was reading a drama with random gore thrown in there.

Cabin in the woods situation here but so much interpersonal drama weaved in and unlikeable characters. I was kind of rooting for the monsters.
