These continue to be fun and light (which it's strange to say about a book in which there's that much death and destruction) and I'll certainly carry on with the series, but there's still something that keeps me from engaging fully. I realise I'm supposed to like Valkyrie, and admire her moxie and sass, but I just don't, she's a snotty teenager with no respect for anyone and no one setting boundaries for her. Which I don't deny is an accurate and probably appealing characterization for many. I think some of the best writing these days is being done in young adult, but in this case I think the sad truth might just be that I'm too old for this.

11 months have passed and we find out exactly what happened to Skulduggery at the end of Book three.
After the huge cliffhanger of Book three, I had to move straight onto four to find out what happened. What I love about this series is the writing - its so exciting and the description makes me feel like I'm watching a movie. I think it helps even more when hearing it on Audio because the actor does such a fantastic job at narrating and getting all the voices perfectly! A few things are unfolding and we get small tastes of these during all the books but they get forgotten because the main story line sucks you in. I believe these minor things might be the cause to the end of the world.... There were so many great moments in this book and as always here are my favourite ones:

"Tanith: you've got mud on your chin
Valkyrie: Yeah, but I make it work"

"Wreath: I thought we were going to have this conversation within the temple walls
Craven: Walls have ears
Wreath: no they don't, you're thinking of people
Craven glowered."

"Skulduggery: A few days rest, those were the doctors orders
Tanith: yeah well my doctor was the one who tortured me for gods sake, I don't think his opinion really matters do you?"

On a side note; I have been listening to this series on Audio and have loved the soundtrack, only to listen to this installment and find that the soundtrack wasn't there! A bit disappointed...

“Good luck to you Valkyrie Cain. You got a lifetime of dark days ahead of you. Enjoy the quiet moments while you can”
