Truly a book that provoked a lot of thought, it was a fascinating engagement and critique of the extreme problems of extreme religious sects. I liked the ending, felt that it wrapped up in a realistic but hopeful way.

I really enjoyed this book. I heard about it on a podcast, and the intersection of reality shows + fundamentalism + scandal is all my interest points. Recommend for anyone who enjoys those realms, or who like rotating perspectives.

This book was made for me — it’s a TLC show in a book. Hello, Duggars! Essie was resourceful & played everyone against themselves, & I loved her for it. Essie & Roarke had such a genuine relationship. I’m so glad they had each other. I want even more backstory about the Hicks family, & I especially want a Liberty Bell spinoff. I admire & applaud Essie for speaking her truth.

I ended up really liking this! You do end up rooting for Essie, and watching her navigate the situation she’s found herself in is very interesting.
