I don't think I had ever read this- but it was really good. Classic for a reason.

I used Madeline as part of the Caldecott unit with 2nd grade. I really like this story, but I was surprised that the students didn't really respond to it.

Utterly charming. Reminds me of my little brother crying when one of my older brothers left for Navy basic training..."Matt won't let me go boop camping with him!!"

I grew up reading Madeline and decided to see how my kids liked it.

They were enthralled.

I've read it now so many times I worry the pages will tear from overuse before we can get it back to the library. I had no idea that it would resonate so well with my younguns. The color schemes aren't eye-popping, but the drawings are captivating. My children stay completely focused on Madeline and Miss Clavel and everything they do as we read. This response is a little bit surprising to me, but I'll take it. :)

Madeline, a young girl living in a boarding house, has an adventurous, brave, and fun spirit. When instructor Miss Clavel finds Madeline crying in the middle of the night, she knows that something is wrong. Madeline is rushed to the hospital, where she has her appendix taken out, and ends up safe and sound (although her classmates are quite jealous of her scar).

An absolute classic.
