This book had a very interesting story, but I feel it was not executed the best..

The main problem was the characters. I had no vested interest in any of them. I feel this was mainly because we did not get much time with each character. Frequently, after the perspective had swapped, it would also recount some of the previous "motivations" behind the character. Still, to me, this ultimately led to it feeling like "filler" rather than something we were supposed to connect with the character on. A good example was the pilot. Pretty much every perspective shift to him was talking about (very minor spoiler)
Spoilerhow his family had all previously been pilots
. This shouldn't have been mentioned as much as it was especially if we assume the reader has the least bit of comprehension.

The story was interesting, but it also felt like we had little stakes in the consequences of the actions. Something major would happen, and it truly felt like losing a pawn in a chess match rather than what it was. It would have been interesting to have a character on or near the points of interest rather than being so far away from the action that it all felt so detached.

Onto some more spoiler-y sections:
SpoilerIt was established early on that we could see a radius of the blackout around the Chinese carrier, but then the US was unable to track it at all. I know they also had "cyber" cloaking capabilities, but I doubt they would be able to cloak two missiles from the ship, especially when it sailed relatively close to US waters. Then after this happened it just sailed back across the Pacific until India found it. WHILE PRETTY MUCH THE ENTIRE US FLEET WAS IN THE PACIFIC AND/OR BLOCKADING THE CHINESE COASTLINE???

SpoilerIt felt weird that India had crazy "cyber" capabilities, and had a vested interest in keeping the global economy afloat, but they allowed the US and Chinese to even begin their sparring. Considering India was able to dismantle the Chinese carrier group so easily, why didn't it just stop the initial nukes and keep the global status quo?

Overall, I probably would not recommend this book. Too many plot holes with uninteresting characters.

This book made me anxious and frustrated.  In war, technology can definitely be a double-edged sword.

A speculative fiction book about a third world war. I listened to this and there was an ensemble cast which made it pretty enjoyable. And kudos to the author because I did not see a lot of the outcomes for the characters coming which made it pretty heartwrenching at times.
