This is one of the best books in the series. Gut-wrenching, tense, amazing array of characters, old and new, intense conflicts, and driving hope in the face of insurmountable odds. So good.

Genuinely a fantastic read, the best book I've read this year, and an incredible entry into the series.

Being the penultimate book in the Expanse, this book serves really well too wrap up several characters' arcs as well as set up for a truly epic ending to the series.

The characterization we get between characters in this book is truly next level, even after having spent so much time with these characters. The plot is also fast-paced and stays surprising with twists and turns throughout. This book has fantastic highs and devastating emotional low points. Easy 5.0

This whole tit for tat thing is so stupid. Tit for tat only makes sense in a game of relatively equal trade and consequences. Yet in this game, we have an unimaginably powerful enemy that literally transcends space and time. And you're going to...throw a random bomb at it? And for what, since there is a speed limit on using the gates? Sooo dumb. It's not the hubris that gets me, just the raw unintelligence of it. This is not the move of a universe conquering immortal. It's the move of a badly written character.

Blowing up the construction platforms is so, so, soooooo shortsighted and dumb. How could anyone not understand this? It's billion year old, irreplaceable magical alien manufacturing tech. It is literally changing the world. And we decide to throw a tantrum and destroy it because we don't like the people who's star it is currently orbiting. Pretty disappointed in Corey for writing characters that have such a complete and utter lack of functioning brains. Yea, I get that insane terrorist exist, and that they really do things like this, but these are supposed to be the good guys that we root for. You need to at least convince me that they thought of this but still went with the plan for whatever reasons. Overall the anti-technology themes of the books just kills me.

Love that Amus became a proto-corpse. What absolutely perfect character to have this happen to. And I love that for once in our lives, everyone treats this reasonably. It is not at all obvious philosophically that the original person is now gone, and what you have left is a meat puppet. And it was driving me insane that supposed genius scientists were not able to consider this viewpoint.

On that subject, it's kinda wild to me that the Laconian civilization is not shown making functional use of the repair drones. I just don't know if I buy how their little bubble of technology has developed.

I feel like I've been missing some great points of view. Either we don't get it entirely (Amus) or we don't get it at the best time (Bobbi). Was pretty disappointed in her death. All the right elements were there on paper for it to be exciting and heart breaking, but for some reason the author's writing of it didn't really wow me.

Anyway, this book represents a general reduction in quality for me. The characters and decisions have stopped seeming as real. The writing is somehow less exciting, even though the plot is there. The insistent anti-technology themes are infuriating.
