This book is good if you are looking for a light read with an amount of dark romance. This book touches on a lot of sensitive subjects so it is not for everyone.

I really enjoyed this book, and even though the description or the idea of IOU seemed somewhat off-putting to me, the author pulled it off really well. It’s set in a fantasy universe mixed with human reality, and while there isn’t too much world building, I felt the writing was really smooth and believable.

Characters Callie and Des I looooove. I marked the characters as diverse in which at least Des is a Fae (don’t know if that counts?) and Callies best friend Temper is described with black features. But really the story revolves around Callie, and I think she’s a very complex character in that she is a strong character throughout the storyline.

I liked it but didn't love it. The storyline was interesting, some minor plot twists kept it interesting, love Callie as a character, although is story may be considered problematic due to
the relationship between Callie and Desmond beginning when she was 16/17, classic "hundreds of years old male love interest" trope, and that it could be considered unrealistic and cliche how quickly she's able to come to terms with her trauma because she's with Des

I'll continue go read the rest of the series to see where it goes, especially after the last few chapters where the plot kicked in more.

65% of the way through this book and giving up on it. The story concept is interesting, but the writing style is not for me. In particular, every time I read a passage with Temper (the Black best friend) I am taken out of the story because of what a cartoonish portrayal of a Black woman this white woman writer has created. It’s awful.

I really really like this book. It's so close to being a 4 start. The characters are fun, the romance is great and the story is interesting. But the writing had my eyes rolling over and over and over.
Callie constantly is saying "the siren in me" like every third page. Like it's is a second entity all together and not an actual part of her. It got tiring. If it comes up that much, why not that just be part of her personality? Like it just felt wrong for this girl who uses her siren powers for work, loves and accepts that, but noooo she can't be freaky with the dude she likes, that's her siren being bad. Also dispite everything Des does/says to Callie, when he talks about marriage, it couldn't possibly be Callie he's talking about because he hasn't said he loved her. I saw the back of my brain with that.
Regardless it's a fun book, and I'll be finishing the series.
