⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/4
A nice easy read! I’m interested to see where the rest of the series goes with four books in total because they have covered a lot of tropes in this first book. Des and Callie are very cute and I am excited to see how their relationship evolves. I must admit I’m also nervous for these next couple of books because I don’t know where the story will go.

I love the mix of supernatural and fantasy between the characters and this world. Des and Callie leave me wanting more! Lots of dark themes but nothing too terribly graphic.

3.5 stars. TW: sexual assault
This was recommended to me by a coworker without the trigger warning for how rapey some aspects of it were—mostly the villains.
The romance between the Bargainer and Callie was interesting even though it started when Callie was a minor. I guess ages go out the window when you’re the king of the night.
I also liked the portrayal of Callie as a siren—I thought that facet of world building was done well.
I probably would’ve liked it more if it was more cozy.

It was okay. It had some really good moments, but they were drowned in mediocrity. I enjoyed the flashbacks more than anything, but that only called to my attention how much the present lacked. I understand why she didn’t want to give us the entire backstory at once, mystique and allure and all that, but the present could’ve been more than repetitive dialogue and adjectives. Shit, give us more Eli and Temper, something other than describing Des or her tortured feelings for 7 years.
Also was there anyone who didn’t know who the $100,000 client was…? I hope not because it was glaringly obvious. I got ahead of myself and bought this on audible for $6 and then the other three for $2-3 a piece bc of the sale or whatever and I’m really hoping the rest of the series does more than just improves. If I’d had to wait a year or two for the next installment, I would’ve never continued. But I managed to “pass” on Libby strategically enough to land all 4 books at the same time so I’ll read them all.

Will probably read this at another point, not sure though.
